The piece of this combo product that matters most here is the phenylephrine, a decongestant that works by tightening blood vessels, which can nudge your blood pressure up. Rauvolfia vomitoria contains yohimbine-like compounds that can also stimulate the body and raise blood pressure. Put them together and those effects may stack, so you could see a bigger rise in blood pressure, a racing or pounding heart, headache, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping.

I'll be honest: this concern is theoretical, based on how these ingredients work rather than strong human studies. Still, since rauvolfia is a potent botanical and phenylephrine already affects blood pressure, I'd treat it cautiously. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you have high blood pressure or heart issues.

Here's the gist with this combo cough-and-cold product: one of its ingredients, dextromethorphan, is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a small amount of yohimbine, which in lab studies appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that holds true in people, dextromethorphan could build up a bit more than usual.

In plain terms, you might feel more of dextromethorphan's effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, or a foggy, off-balance feeling. I want to be honest though: this is based only on test-tube research, so it's a theoretical concern, not something firmly proven. Still, because rauvolfia is a potent plant on its own, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.
