Here's the short version: combining Rauvolfia vomitoria with ziprasidone (Geodon) can stack their effects on top of each other. The reserpine-type alkaloids in this plant lower your brain's chemical messengers and can drop blood pressure, while ziprasidone is also a brain-acting medicine that affects those same systems. Put together, they may push each other further than either alone.

What that could feel like in real life is more drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness when you stand up, low blood pressure, and a lower mood or sluggishness. Worth knowing: this warning is theoretical, based on how the two work rather than firm studies, so the exact risk isn't proven. Still, since this plant is potent, please don't combine them without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Ziprasidone Used For?

Brand name: Geodon

Ziprasidone is prescribed for adults with schizophrenia and for adults experiencing manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder. It can be used on its own for acute manic or mixed episodes, or added to lithium or valproate to help maintain stability in bipolar I disorder long-term.

An injectable form is also available for rapid control of agitation in people with schizophrenia who need quick relief. Prescribers are advised to weigh ziprasidone's potential effect on heart rhythm when choosing among treatment options.
