Why this applies to Lovastatin

Lovastatin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body clears lovastatin using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, lovastatin could build up higher than usual in your system, which can raise the odds of statin side effects like muscle aches, weakness, or in rare cases more serious muscle breakdown.

That said, I want to be honest about the evidence. This was only seen in test-tube work, never confirmed in people, so it's mostly theoretical. Since uva ursi is meant for short-term use anyway and can stress the liver on its own, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two. Don't stop your lovastatin on your own.

Lovastatin also falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS.

Theoretically, uva ursi may increase levels of drugs metabolized by glucuronidation.
In vitro, uva ursi extract appears to strongly inhibit UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A1 (UGT1A1). However, uva ursi extract does not appear to inhibit UGT1A1 in animal models. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest picture with uva ursi and lovastatin. The concern on file is that uva ursi might slow down a clearance pathway in the body called glucuronidation, which could let certain drugs build up. In theory, if lovastatin levels climbed, you'd worry about its usual side effects becoming more noticeable, things like muscle aches, weakness, or tenderness, and rarely liver irritation.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This effect was only seen in lab dish (test tube) studies, and it actually did not show up in animal testing, and it has never been reported in people. So this is a theoretical, weak-evidence interaction. That said, since uva ursi can be hard on the liver itself, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Lovastatin

What Is Lovastatin Used For?

Brand names: Mevacor, Altocor

Lovastatin is used to lower high LDL ("bad") cholesterol and total cholesterol in people whose levels have not improved enough with diet alone. It is also used to slow the buildup of plaque in the arteries (coronary atherosclerosis) in people who already have coronary heart disease.

In adults without existing heart disease but with high cholesterol and low HDL ("good") cholesterol, lovastatin tablets are approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, and the need for procedures to open blocked arteries. Lovastatin tablets are also approved for adolescents aged 10–17 with a specific inherited condition called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (heFH), when diet changes alone haven't been enough.
