Here's the short version: this is a very mild, mostly theoretical concern. The caffeine in yerba mate can nudge blood sugar a little, sometimes up, sometimes down, but the effect is small and unpredictable. Your Farxiga (dapagliflozin) works by helping your kidneys flush extra sugar out through your urine, and yerba mate does not change how your body processes the drug itself.

So mostly, enjoy your mate in reasonable amounts. The main thing I'd watch for is that caffeine can mask early signs of low blood sugar, like the shakes or a racing heart, especially if you take other diabetes medicines too. If you notice your numbers bouncing around, mention it to your doctor or pharmacist rather than changing anything on your own.

What Is Dapagliflozin Used For?

Dapagliflozin is used for several serious conditions. It helps improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes (alongside diet and exercise). It also reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is additionally approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization, and urgent visits due to heart failure in adults with heart failure — and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, including reducing the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular death, in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of getting worse.
