Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might increase the risk of hypokalemia when used concomitantly with other diuretics.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the gist: ethacrynic acid (Edecrin) is a strong "loop" water pill, and one thing it's already known for is flushing potassium out of your body along with the extra fluid. Yerba mate brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine can nudge potassium lower too. Put them together and, in theory, you could end up with a bigger dip in potassium than either would cause alone.

I'll be honest with you though, this concern is mostly based on how these things work on paper, not strong human studies. A cup or two of mate is unlikely to be a problem for most folks. If you're drinking it heavily, watch for signs of low potassium like muscle cramps, weakness, or a fluttery heartbeat, and let your doctor or pharmacist know so they can check your levels.

What Is Ethacrynic Acid Used For?

Brand name: Edecrin

Ethacrynic acid tablets (sold as Edecrin and Ethacrynic Acid) are used to treat edema — excess fluid that builds up in the body — when other, milder diuretics aren't strong enough. It treats edema related to congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome (a kidney condition that causes protein loss and swelling).

It is also used for short-term management of fluid buildup from malignancy (cancer-related ascites), idiopathic edema (swelling with no clear cause), and lymphedema (swelling from a blocked lymph system). In hospitalized children (not infants), it may be used short-term for edema related to congenital heart disease or nephrotic syndrome.
