Furosemide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might increase the risk of hypokalemia when used concomitantly with other diuretics.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with furosemide (Lasix): it's a water pill that already flushes potassium out of your body in your urine. Yerba mate brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine can nudge potassium lower too. So the worry is that the two stacked together might push your potassium down a bit further than the furosemide would on its own.

To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not something proven in studies, and an occasional cup is unlikely to cause trouble. But low potassium can leave you feeling fatigued, crampy, or notice a fluttering heartbeat. If you drink mate regularly or in large amounts, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor so they can check your potassium level.

About Furosemide

What Is Furosemide Used For?

Brand name: Lasix

Furosemide tablets and oral solution are used in adults and children to treat edema (fluid buildup) caused by congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome. In adults, oral furosemide is also used to treat high blood pressure, alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.

Furosemide injection is reserved for patients who cannot take oral medicine or for emergency situations such as acute pulmonary edema (sudden dangerous fluid in the lungs). Furoscix (subcutaneous injection) is specifically indicated for edema in adults with chronic heart failure or chronic kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome, and in pediatric patients weighing at least 43 kg. Lasix Onyu (subcutaneous injection) is indicated for edema in adults with chronic heart failure only.
