Yerba mate contains caffeine. Quinolones (also called fluoroquinolones) can decrease caffeine clearance by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.

Here's the thing to know about pairing yerba mate with nalidixic acid (NegGram). This antibiotic belongs to the quinolone family, and quinolones can slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that normally clears caffeine from your body. Since yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, that caffeine can hang around longer and build up while you're on the antibiotic.

In real life, that usually means the caffeine hits you harder than expected. Think jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, an upset stomach, or feeling anxious and wired. The antibiotic itself still works fine, this is really about the caffeine effect. The good news is this is easy to manage by cutting back on mate (and other caffeine) during your short course of treatment. If you're unsure, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the thing to understand about this pairing: it's really about the caffeine in your yerba mate, not your antibiotic. Nalidixic Acid (NegGram) can mildly slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your body uses to clear caffeine. So when you take the two together, the caffeine from your mate may stick around a little longer than usual.

In plain terms, you might feel the caffeine more: jitters, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This is only a theoretical concern based on how the drug works, not from strong studies, and it's rated minor. Nalidixic Acid itself isn't affected. If you notice you're extra buzzed, just ease up on the mate, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.
