Here's the simple version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down ulipristal (Ella). Lab tests suggest yerba mate may slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more ulipristal hang around, which might mean slightly stronger effects or side effects like headache, nausea, belly pain, or some spotting.

I want to be honest about how flimsy this is. The concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, and it's rated as minor. One single dose of Ella is unlikely to be thrown off by your usual cup of mate. Since this pill matters most when timing is everything, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist if you have any worry.

Here's the thing about this pairing: it works in the opposite direction from what you might expect. It's not that your yerba mate changes how Ella works, it's that the medication can slow down how fast your body clears the caffeine from the mate. Studies show contraceptive medicines can reduce caffeine clearance by 40% to 65%, so the caffeine simply hangs around longer.

In practice, that means your usual cup of mate might hit a little harder, leaving you feeling jittery, racing-hearted, or wide awake at bedtime. Keep in mind Ella is a one-time emergency pill, not a daily medicine, so any effect is short-lived. This is mostly theoretical and rated minor, so no need to worry. If you feel wired, just ease up on the mate and check with your pharmacist.

Ella (ulipristal acetate) is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or when another form of birth control has failed or was used incorrectly. It must be taken as soon as possible, within 5 days (120 hours) of that event.

Ella is intended for occasional, emergency use only — it is not a substitute for regular, ongoing contraception.
