What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Gotu Kola against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Himalaya Gotu Kola is a 2-ingredient product containing organic gotu kola standardized extract and organic gotu kola powder. Both are forms of the same plant, traditionally used in herbal medicine.
There are no inactive ingredients (fillers or binders) listed.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gotu kola is mixed. It's possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor circulation in the legs) and burns.
However, it's rated possibly ineffective for radiation dermatitis and cognitive function. For Alzheimer's disease and generalized anxiety disorder, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate how well it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated over the short term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects when taken orally are stomach irritation and nausea.
Liver toxicity is rare but has been reported in case studies; one clinical trial monitoring liver function found no changes at 120 mg daily for 6 months, but doses and product quality varied in the cases where problems occurred. There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy—it's traditionally been avoided during pregnancy.
Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best avoided if you're nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Gotu Kola, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety or pain medications with sedative properties)—gotu kola may increase drowsiness. Also double-check any medications known to affect liver function.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola by Himalaya may be worth considering if you're looking into support for venous insufficiency or minor burns and want a plant-based option. If you take any sedating medications or drugs that affect your liver, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Himalaya Gotu Kola interacts with medications through its gotu kola content.
The most serious interactions are Moderate in severity and involve CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications) and hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can stress the liver).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Gotu kola may increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants. Lab research suggests it may work by binding to GABA receptors, which are involved in calming the nervous system.
If you take any sedating medication—including sleep aids, anxiety medications, or pain relievers with sedative properties—combining them with gotu kola could make you drowsier than expected.
Gotu kola may also have additive adverse effects with hepatotoxic drugs. There are at least four case reports of liver damage (hepatotoxicity) linked to gotu kola use, though it's unclear whether gotu kola was actually the cause in each case.
If you take any medication known to affect liver function, that's worth checking before adding this product.
Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications. Use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs before you start.
