Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9. Drugs that are metabolized by CYP2C9 include celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Voltaren), fluvastatin (Lescol), glipizide (Glucotrol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), phenytoin (Dilantin), piroxicam (Feldene), tamoxifen (Nolvadex), tolbutamide (Tolinase), torsemide (Demadex), and S-warfarin (Coumadin).

Here's the gist: a compound in Ceylon Leadwort called plumbagin can slow down a liver enzyme known as CYP2C9. Omeprazole is partly cleared by that enzyme (along with another one called CYP2C19), so in theory, blocking it could let more omeprazole linger in your body. That could mean a bit more drug effect and possibly a little more in the way of side effects like headache, nausea, stomach upset, or gas.

The reassuring part: this has only been seen in lab dishes, not in actual people, so it's a theoretical concern at this point. Omeprazole is also generally well tolerated. Still, before pairing the two, run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh in for your situation.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist with omeprazole (Prilosec). Your liver helps clear this drug, partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Ceylon Leadwort contains plumbagin, which in lab testing slowed down that same enzyme. If it does that in people too, omeprazole could clear out a little more slowly and build up somewhat, which might mean stronger acid-blocking and a touch more chance of side effects like headache, nausea, or stomach upset.

The important part: this is only test-tube evidence so far, and it hasn't been seen in actual patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Omeprazole isn't a high-risk drug here. Still, before adding this supplement, run it past your pharmacist or doctor, since the plant itself can be irritating in larger doses.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
