Why this applies to Aliskiren

Aliskiren falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, use of chanca piedra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear aliskiren (Tekturna). In test-tube studies, chanca piedra appears to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, less of the drug would be broken down, so more could build up in your system. With aliskiren, higher levels could mean your blood pressure drops more than expected, leaving you dizzy, lightheaded, or tired, and it could nudge up your potassium.

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab research, and it has never been reported in actual patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with antihypertensive drugs might have additive blood pressure lowering effects.
Animal research suggests that chanca piedra can decrease blood pressure. However, this effect was not observed in most hypertensive patients treated with chanca piedra for 10 days.

Here's the gist for folks taking aliskiren (Tekturna) for blood pressure. Some animal studies hint that chanca piedra may nudge blood pressure down a little on its own. Since aliskiren already lowers your blood pressure by calming the renin system, stacking the two could, in theory, add up and drop your numbers more than you'd want.

I want to be honest about how weak this is. It's based mostly on lab and animal work, and in one short human study chanca piedra didn't actually lower blood pressure in most patients. So this is a theoretical, unlikely concern, not something I'd lose sleep over. Still, if you notice dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when you stand up, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Aliskiren Used For?

Brand name: Tekturna

Aliskiren tablets — available as the brand Tekturna and as generic aliskiren — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Controlling blood pressure is most effective as part of a broader plan that may include healthy eating, exercise, reducing sodium, and managing other risk factors like cholesterol and blood sugar. Many people need more than one blood pressure medicine to reach their goal.
