STIMULANT DRUGS
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine
Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Coffee interacts with.
Coffee contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: this medication already has caffeine built right into it. So when you drink coffee on top of it, you're basically stacking caffeine on caffeine. Both are stimulants, and the more you add, the more you may feel the jittery side. That can mean a racing or pounding heart, feeling shaky or anxious, an upset stomach, and trouble falling asleep at night.
This is more of a common-sense, expert-opinion concern than a dangerous reaction, but it's a real one, especially if you drink several cups a day. The codeine and butalbital pieces can make you drowsy, while the caffeine fights that, so things can feel a bit off-balance. If you notice your heart pounding or you can't sleep, cut back on coffee and check in with your pharmacist or doctor.
