DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina

Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Rauzide is a combination pill that pairs bendroflumethiazide, a thiazide water pill, with rauwolfia, a blood pressure agent. The piece that matters here is the diuretic. Thiazides like bendroflumethiazide already tend to flush potassium out through your urine, and that is something we always keep an eye on.

The concern with coffee is mostly theoretical, based on how caffeine works rather than strong studies. In large amounts, caffeine may nudge potassium a little lower too, so heavy coffee drinking on top of this medicine could, in theory, add up. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, an odd heartbeat, or feeling unusually tired. A normal cup or two with breakfast is unlikely to be a problem, but if you drink a lot, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so your potassium can be checked.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina page

“Rauzide combines two blood-pressure medicines, the thiazide diuretic bendroflumethiazide and rauwolfia serpentina, so anything that also lowers pressure, pulls off fluid, or shifts electrolytes lands on already sensitive ground. This page warrants real caution.”

About Coffee

What is Coffee?

  • Alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Mental focus and concentration
  • Athletic performance
  • Headache relief
  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
