Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Coffee interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Coffee in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate falls under ESTROGENS — the group Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, estrogens might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.

Here's an interesting twist with your birth control pill. The estrogen in it (ethinyl estradiol) can slow down how your body clears caffeine. So the interaction works the other way around from what you might expect: it's not that coffee changes your pill, it's that your pill can make caffeine hang around longer in your system.

In plain terms, that cup of coffee may hit you a little harder and last longer. You might notice more jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This is fairly likely but usually mild, and it doesn't make your birth control any less effective. If you feel extra buzzed lately, simply cutting back a bit may help. Chat with your pharmacist if you have questions.

Here's something a lot of people don't realize about your birth control pill (like Loestrin Fe or Junel Fe). The estrogen in it, ethinyl estradiol, can slow down how fast your body clears caffeine, by as much as 40% to 65%. So the pill isn't changed by your coffee. Instead, the coffee sticks around longer in your system.

What this means in real life is that your usual two or three cups may hit a little harder. You might notice more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge. This is a fairly common and expected effect, not a dangerous one. If you feel wired lately, try easing back on caffeine and chat with your pharmacist if you have questions.
