Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Gemifloxacin
Gemifloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Coffee interacts with.
Coffee contains caffeine. Concomitant use of caffeine and quinolones can decrease caffeine clearance and increase effects and risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing with this combo: gemifloxacin can slow down how your body clears caffeine. The antibiotic isn't the problem itself, it's that your morning cup (or three) may hang around longer and hit harder than usual. So while you're on a course of gemifloxacin for your pneumonia or bronchitis, the same amount of coffee might leave you feeling jittery, anxious, having a racing or pounding heartbeat, or struggling to fall asleep at night.
Good news is this is usually mild and manageable. Many people simply cut back on coffee, tea, and energy drinks for the few days they're taking the antibiotic. You don't need to quit cold turkey, but if you notice your heart racing or you're wired and can't sleep, that's your cue. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure how much is okay for you.

About Coffee
What is Coffee?
- Alertness and reducing fatigue
- Mental focus and concentration
- Athletic performance
- Headache relief
- Weight management
Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
About Gemifloxacin
What Is Gemifloxacin Used For?
Brand name: Factive
-
Gemifloxacin is used to treat pneumonia. Gemifloxacin may also be used to treat bronchitis but should not be used for this condition if there are other treatment options. Gemifloxacin is in a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It works by killing bacteria that cause infections.
-
Antibiotics such as gemifloxacin do not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
