Coffee and Ozanimod Hydrochloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)

Why this applies to Ozanimod Hydrochloride

Ozanimod Hydrochloride falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patient switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the connection most people miss with Zeposia (ozanimod): one of its active breakdown products gently blocks an enzyme called MAO, the same enzyme older antidepressants block. That's why ozanimod carries a caution similar to the classic MAOI food and drug warnings. Coffee, in turn, contains caffeine, which in lab studies also nudges MAO activity. The worry on file is mostly theoretical, but the concern is a possible spike in blood pressure if the two pile up.

In real life, your morning cup or two is very unlikely to cause trouble. The one case report involved someone drinking 10 to 12 cups a day. I'd just avoid going overboard on caffeine, watch for headaches, pounding heartbeat, or feeling flushed, and check with your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes.

About Coffee

What is Coffee?

  • Alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Mental focus and concentration
  • Athletic performance
  • Headache relief
  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
