Cola Nut and Aspirin, Caffeine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Cola Nut interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Cola Nut in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine

Aspirin, Caffeine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Cola Nut interacts with.

Theoretically, cola nut may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Here's an interesting overlap to keep in mind. The Anacin product you're asking about already contains aspirin, which is a blood thinner that keeps platelets from clumping together. Cola nut, on the lab bench, has shown a little of that same anti-clumping activity (mostly tied to its caffeine). So in theory, stacking them could nudge your bleeding risk up a touch, meaning easier bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset from the aspirin side.

The honest part: this has never actually been reported in people, and the evidence is only test-tube level. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger thing to watch is doubling up on caffeine, since Anacin already has some. If you take aspirin daily or have any bleeding concerns, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

STIMULANT DRUGS

2 of 2

Aspirin, Caffeine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: your Anacin already has caffeine built right into it, and cola nut is basically a natural source of caffeine too. So taking them together is like stacking two doses of a stimulant on top of each other. There's no fancy enzyme story here, it's just additive. More caffeine in your system means a bigger chance of the jittery stuff, things like a racing or pounding heart, feeling wired or anxious, trouble sleeping, an upset stomach, and a mild bump in blood pressure.

This is mostly expert caution rather than hard proof, so it's not an emergency. Still, if you take Anacin regularly, it's worth mentioning the cola nut to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you have any heart concerns.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Caffeine page

“Anacin combines aspirin with caffeine, so supplements can hit it from two directions, and a few of the 347 on this list deserve real respect. The biggest group, over 200 ingredients, can raise bleeding risk on top of aspirin's blood-thinning effect; beer and wine carry major ratings because alcohol plus an aspirin-type drug makes stoma…”

Cola nut is a caffeine-containing seed from West Africa used mainly as a natural stimulant for energy and alertness.
