Moxifloxacin falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Even in healthy volunteers, EKG changes including prolonged QT interval and premature atrial contractions have been reported with ingestion of recommended doses of ephedra. Ephedra may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval. This may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

Here's the concern with this pair: moxifloxacin is one of the fluoroquinolone antibiotics most known for stretching out the heart's electrical reset time, what doctors call the QT interval. Ephedra, with its stimulant compounds like ephedrine, can nudge the heart in the same direction. Stack the two together and you may get an additive effect, which can raise the risk of a dangerous, irregular heartbeat (a ventricular arrhythmia).

This isn't about ephedra changing how your body breaks down moxifloxacin. It's two things pushing the heart's rhythm the same risky way. Honestly, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason, and I wouldn't pair it with anything. If you're on moxifloxacin and considering any stimulant product, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the concern with pairing ephedra and moxifloxacin: both can be tough on your liver. Moxifloxacin, like other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, occasionally causes liver irritation, and ephedra supplements have been tied to many real cases of liver injury. Put them together and the worry is that those effects could add up.

I want to be honest about how strong this evidence is: it's mostly theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than studies of the two combined. Still, watch for signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. Honestly, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements and isn't something I'd recommend at all. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything with this antibiotic.

About Moxifloxacin

What Is Moxifloxacin Used For?

Brand name: Avelox

Moxifloxacin tablets and intravenous (IV) injection are approved for adults 18 and older to treat bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin infections, complicated abdominal infections, plague, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis. Note: moxifloxacin should only be used for sinusitis and chronic bronchitis flare-ups when no other antibiotic option is available, due to the risk of serious side effects.

Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution (eye drops) — including the brand Vigamox — is a separate, topical formulation used only in the eye to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) caused by susceptible bacteria. The eye drop form is not used for body-wide infections.
