Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Dextromethorphan HBr
Dextromethorphan HBr falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rauvolfia Vomitoria interacts with.
Rauvolfia vomitoria contains small amounts of the drug yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant in Vicks Formula 44. Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a small amount of yohimbine, and in lab studies yohimbine can slow that same enzyme down. If CYP2D6 is blocked, dextromethorphan can clear more slowly and build up in your system, which may make its effects stronger.
In real life that could mean more drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, or feeling spacey. I want to be honest, though: this is based only on test-tube research, not on people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, since Rauvolfia is a potent plant on its own, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.
