Here's the gist for vigabatrin (Sabril): this isn't about one drug changing how the other is broken down. Instead, it's about overlap. Rauvolfia vomitoria can have its own calming, sedating effect, and vigabatrin already tends to make people feel drowsy or tired. Stack the two and you could feel more sleepy, foggy, or unsteady than usual.

Now, I'd keep this in perspective. The concern is theoretical, based mostly on how these compounds behave and on animal research, not solid human studies. Still, rauvolfia is a potent herb that also lowers blood pressure and affects mood, so it's not a casual add-on. Before combining them, please check with your doctor or pharmacist, especially since vigabatrin is being used to control seizures.

Rauvolfia vomitoria is an African shrub whose root contains powerful alkaloids, including reserpine, that have historically been used for high blood pressure and agitation. About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
