Theanine and Tegaserod

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Tegaserod

Tegaserod falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Tegaserod (Zelnorm) and theanine. Tegaserod works on serotonin pathways in your gut to get things moving and ease IBS-with-constipation symptoms. Theanine, an amino acid from tea, is thought to nudge serotonin in the brain, but the studies are honestly all over the place. Some say it raises serotonin, some say it lowers it, and that's why this is rated as a minor, unlikely concern.

The practical takeaway: there are no real-world reports of theanine causing serotonin problems. So this is mostly a theoretical, on-paper overlap rather than something that tends to cause trouble. If you ever feel unusually jittery, flushed, restless, or have a racing heart, loop in your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tegaserod page

“Tegaserod (Zelnorm) treats constipation-type IBS by acting on serotonin receptors in the gut, and that mechanism is exactly why this list deserves genuine care. Twenty of the 39 supplements here add serotonin activity of their own, raising the chance of serotonin syndrome, a dangerous overload marked by agitation, fast heartbeat, and f…”

About Theanine

What is Theanine?

Theanine
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Relaxation and calm
  • Sleep support
  • Focus and cognitive function

Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
