Effient falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit cytochrome CYP2C19. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the thing about Effient (prasugrel): it's a prodrug, meaning it has to be switched on by your body's enzymes before it can do its job of keeping platelets from clumping. Prasugrel relies mostly on other enzymes for that activation, with CYP2C19 playing only a small supporting part, so a CYP2C19 blocker matters less here than it would for some other clot medicines.

This particular concern with uva ursi is only theoretical, seen in lab dishes and not in real people. Still, if it did slow the enzyme even slightly, the worry would be slightly less activated drug and a bit weaker clot protection, not extra bleeding. Since uva ursi can also stress the liver and you're on Effient for a serious heart reason, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the thing about Effient (prasugrel): it's a prodrug, meaning you swallow it in an inactive form and your body has to switch it on. Several liver enzymes, including CYP3A4, help turn it into its active clot-blocking form. Lab studies hint that uva ursi might slow down CYP3A4. In theory, slowing that activation step could mean a little less of the active drug, which could weaken its blood-thinning power and, very theoretically, leave you less protected against clots.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This signal comes only from test-tube data, not from real people, so we honestly don't know if it matters in everyday life. Effient is too important to gamble with after a heart procedure, so don't start uva ursi without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Prasugrel

What Is Prasugrel Used For?

Brand name: Prasugrel

Prasugrel tablets (brand names Effient and Prasugrel) are used to lower the risk of dangerous blood clots — including clots that can block a stent — in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes unstable angina (chest pain at rest) and heart attacks (both NSTEMI and STEMI types). It is used specifically in patients who are being treated with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which a catheter is used to open a blocked coronary artery, often with a stent.

Effient has been shown to reduce the combined rate of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, or nonfatal stroke compared to clopidogrel — with the benefit driven mainly by fewer heart attacks.
