Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit cytochrome CYP2C19. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to clear omeprazole out of your system. In lab testing, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, omeprazole could hang around a bit longer and its effects could be amplified. With this medicine that's usually pretty mild, think headache, stomach upset, gas, or feeling a little more tired than usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is theoretical, seen only in a test tube, and has never been reported in actual people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since uva ursi is best used short-term anyway, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Here's the gist with omeprazole (Prilosec) and uva ursi. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear omeprazole. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, a bit more omeprazole could linger in your body, which in theory might mean stronger effects or side effects like headache, nausea, stomach pain, or diarrhea.

The important part: this was only seen in test-tube research, not in actual people, so it's quite theoretical and likely mild for most folks. Uva ursi is also meant only for short-term use because of its own liver concerns. Before pairing these, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
