These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Coffee interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Coffee in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine
Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Coffee interacts with.
Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, the caffeine in coffee might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's a fun wrinkle with Fiorinal: it already contains caffeine, the very same active piece found in your morning coffee. The aspirin in this medication is the part that thins your blood a bit by quieting your platelets. Lab studies hint that caffeine itself may also have a mild blood-thinning, clot-dissolving effect, so in theory adding coffee on top could nudge your bleeding risk up slightly.
The good news is this is only theoretical and has never actually been reported in people. For most folks, a normal cup or two of coffee alongside Fiorinal is unlikely to cause trouble. Just watch for things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset from the aspirin, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you notice anything unusual.

STIMULANT DRUGS
2 of 2Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.
Coffee contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: your Fiorinal already contains caffeine right in the tablet. When you wash it down with coffee, you're stacking caffeine on top of caffeine. That can nudge up the usual jittery side effects, things like a racing or pounding heart, feeling shaky or anxious, an upset stomach, and trouble falling asleep. None of this changes how the aspirin or butalbital part works, it's really just a caffeine-plus-caffeine situation.
This is more of a common-sense, expert-opinion caution than a proven danger, and an occasional cup probably won't cause much. But if you're drinking several cups a day, or you already feel wired or your sleep is suffering, it's worth chatting with your pharmacist or doctor about your total caffeine.

“The aspirin inside Fiorinal (aspirin, butalbital, caffeine) is the reason this list deserves careful reading rather than a quick skim. More than 200 of the supplements and herbs on file can thin the blood further and raise bleeding risk on top of aspirin's own antiplatelet effect, and even ordinary alcohol, beer and wine included, carr…”

About Coffee
What is Coffee?
- Alertness and reducing fatigue
- Mental focus and concentration
- Athletic performance
- Headache relief
- Weight management
Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
