Guarana + Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine
Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine brand name: Dristan.
Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine falls into 2 drug categories that Guarana can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, guarana may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Guarana interacts with whole categories of medication. Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Guarana in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine
Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Guarana interacts with.
In vitro and animal research suggests that guarana extract can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect may be due to the caffeine in guarana, which is also reported to have antiplatelet activity. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep in mind with a product like Dristan, which combines ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever) and pseudoephedrine (a decongestant). Ibuprofen already nudges your platelets toward clumping a bit less, so bleeding risk is the part worth watching. Lab and animal studies hint that guarana, mostly through its caffeine, may also make platelets a little less sticky. Stacked together, the theory is a slightly higher bleeding tendency, things like easier bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset.
Honestly, this has not been shown in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. There's a separate point too: both guarana's caffeine and the pseudoephedrine are stimulants, so together they can leave you jittery or raise your heart rate. If you take ibuprofen regularly or have any bleeding concerns, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

STIMULANT DRUGS
2 of 2Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.
Guarana contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The part of Dristan that matters here is the pseudoephedrine, a decongestant that already acts as a mild stimulant. Guarana is basically a concentrated source of caffeine, so pairing the two means you are stacking one stimulant on top of another. The ibuprofen piece doesn't really play into this.
On paper, that combination could nudge up the usual pseudoephedrine and caffeine side effects: a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or a bump in blood pressure. To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these ingredients work, not strong proof, and an occasional cup of coffee likely won't matter. Still, concentrated guarana supplements are stronger, so check with your pharmacist if you have heart issues or anxiety.

About Guarana
What is Guarana?
- Energy and alertness
- Reducing fatigue
- Weight loss support
- Athletic performance
- Mental focus
Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
