Elexacaftor, Tezacaftor, Ivacaftor falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist for folks on Trikafta (elexacaftor, tezacaftor, and ivacaftor). All three of these pieces are cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some early lab research suggests hemp might speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could clear Trikafta a little faster, which in theory could make it work a bit less well at keeping your lungs and digestion running smoothly.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from test-tube studies only, not from people, and it's rated as a minor, theoretical concern. Eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as a food is very unlikely to cause a problem. Since Trikafta is so important for cystic fibrosis, just give your CF team or pharmacist a quick heads-up before using concentrated hemp supplements.

What Is Elexacaftor, Tezacaftor, and Ivacaftor Used For?

Brand name: Trikafta

Trikafta (elexacaftor, tezacaftor, and ivacaftor) is used to treat cystic fibrosis (CF) in adults and children aged 2 years and older who have a clinical diagnosis of CF and carry at least one CFTR gene variant that is expected to respond to the medication — either based on clinical trial data or laboratory testing.

If a patient's genetic variant is not already known, an FDA-cleared CF genetic test should be used to confirm eligibility before starting treatment.
