Hemp and Eravacycline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Eravacycline

Eravacycline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with hemp and Xerava (eravacycline): lab studies hint that hemp may speed up an enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps break down many medicines. In theory, that faster breakdown could lower eravacycline levels and make it work a little less well, which matters for an antibiotic you're counting on to clear a serious abdominal infection.

Now for the reassuring part. This is only a theoretical, lab-based concern, rated minor, with no real human evidence behind it. Eravacycline is also given by IV in the hospital, so your care team is watching closely. Eating hemp seeds or hemp oil in food amounts is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, mention any hemp supplements to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

About Eravacycline Injection

What Is Eravacycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Xerava

Xerava (eravacycline) is used to treat complicated intra-abdominal infections (serious infections inside the abdomen, such as those following bowel problems or surgery) in adults 18 and older. It targets a range of bacterial types, including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus species, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacteroides species, and several others identified by lab testing.

Xerava is not approved for complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI). It should only be used when a bacterial infection is proven or strongly suspected — using antibiotics unnecessarily contributes to antibiotic resistance.
