Hemp and Tasimelteon

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Tasimelteon falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Tasimelteon

Tasimelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the basic idea with hemp and Tasimelteon (Hetlioz). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break this medication down. Some early lab research suggests hemp may speed that enzyme up a bit, which could clear tasimelteon a little faster and slightly soften how well it works. Since this drug helps reset your sleep-wake cycle, a weaker effect might mean it just doesn't help your sleep schedule as much as expected.

That said, I'd keep this in perspective. This is a minor concern based only on test-tube data, not real people, so we can't say it actually happens in the body. Food-sized amounts of hemp seeds are very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated hemp products regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Tasimelteon also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic idea with hemp and Hetlioz (tasimelteon). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break tasimelteon down, and lab studies suggest hemp may nudge that enzyme to work a little faster. If that happened in real life, your system could clear the medicine a bit quicker than usual, which might make it less effective at helping you fall asleep or stay on a regular sleep schedule.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so we really don't know if it matters in everyday use. The rating on file is minor. Eating hemp seeds in food is very different from taking concentrated hemp supplements. If you're considering a hemp product, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
