Here's the thinking on combining hemp with your voxelotor (Oxbryta). Your body clears voxelotor mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some early lab research hints that hemp may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in real life, it could clear voxelotor a little faster and lower the amount in your blood, which in theory might make it work less well at keeping your red blood cells healthy and oxygen-rich.

I want to be honest about how soft this is. The concern comes only from test-tube studies, not from people, and it's rated minor. Eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food is very unlikely to cause a problem. Since voxelotor matters a lot for sickle cell disease, just run any concentrated hemp supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Oxbryta (voxelotor) is approved to treat sickle cell disease (SCD) in adults and in children as young as 4 years old. It works by targeting the underlying problem in sickle cell disease — the abnormal hemoglobin that causes red blood cells to take on a rigid, sickle shape.

This approval was granted under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway, based on the drug's ability to raise hemoglobin levels. Continued approval may depend on results from confirmatory clinical trials showing broader clinical benefit.
