Atenolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Rauvolfia Vomitoria interacts with.

Theoretically, Rauvolfia vomitoria might increase the risk of hypotension.
Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a very small amount of the drug reserpine. Reserpine can reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Here's the simple version: Atenolol already lowers your blood pressure and slows your heart rate, and Rauvolfia vomitoria contains reserpine, which also pushes blood pressure down. Stack two things that work in the same direction and you can overshoot. So this is really an additive effect, not a problem with how your body breaks atenolol down (atenolol is mostly cleared by the kidneys and isn't a prodrug).

If your pressure drops too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, unusually tired, or faint when you stand up, and your pulse could run slow. The good news is this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these compounds behave. Still, Rauvolfia is a potent plant, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Atenolol Used For?

Brand names: Tenormin, Atenix

Atenolol tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina pectoris (chest pain caused by narrowed coronary arteries). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack. Long-term use helps manage chronic chest pain.

Atenolol is also used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack (myocardial infarction) to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death. Treatment is started as soon as the patient's condition allows, typically in a hospital setting.
