Here's the simple version. Both Depakote (divalproex) and Rauvolfia vomitoria can have a calming, sedating effect on the brain. Depakote already tends to make some people feel drowsy or foggy, and this African root has shown sedative effects in animal studies. So if you take them together, the worry is that those calming effects could stack up and leave you feeling extra sleepy, dizzy, or slowed down.

Keep in mind, this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than strong human studies, so it isn't a sure thing. Still, Rauvolfia is a potent plant that also affects blood pressure and mood, so it isn't one to mix casually. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them, and never adjust your Depakote on your own.

Valproic acid capsules (brands Valproic and Valproic Acid) and valproic acid oral solution (brand Valproic Acid) are both used to treat epilepsy. Specifically, they are approved for complex partial seizures (either alone or with other seizure types) as monotherapy or add-on therapy, and for simple and complex absence seizures as sole therapy or add-on therapy.
