Here's the simple version: hydrocodone is a strong opioid pain medicine that already slows down your brain and body. It can make you drowsy, foggy, and in higher amounts can slow your breathing. Rauvolfia vomitoria has shown calming, sedative-type effects in animal studies, so pairing the two could in theory pile on more of that drowsy, sluggish feeling.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this concern is theoretical and based on how these substances behave, not on solid human studies. It doesn't change how hydrocodone is broken down, it just may add to the same sleepy effect. Still, because opioids carry real risks like over-sedation and slowed breathing, please don't combine these without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Theoretically, Rauvolfia vomitoria might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
Rauvolfia vomitoria contains small amounts of the drug yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

Here's the wrinkle with hydrocodone: it's actually a prodrug for part of its pain relief. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn some of the hydrocodone into hydromorphone, which is a much stronger painkiller. Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a little yohimbine, and lab studies suggest yohimbine can block CYP2D6. If that enzyme is slowed down, your body may make less of that potent hydromorphone, so the medication could feel like it's working less well for your pain.

That said, this comes only from test-tube research, not from real patients, so it's theoretical. Hydrocodone still relieves pain on its own too. Before combining these, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially since this herb itself strongly affects blood pressure and mood.
