Ethosuximide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, yohimbe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.

Here's the gist for ethosuximide (Zarontin) and yohimbe. Your seizure medicine is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed that enzyme up a bit. In theory, that could clear ethosuximide a little faster and lower its level in your body, which might make it slightly less effective at controlling those absence (petit mal) seizures.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube research, not real patients, and it's rated a minor interaction. So I'm not alarmed. Still, with a seizure medicine, even small dips matter, and yohimbe itself can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. What Is Ethosuximide Used For?

Brand name: Zarontin

Ethosuximide — sold as Zarontin and also available as generic Ethosuximide — is used to control absence (petit mal) epilepsy. Absence seizures are brief episodes where a person loses awareness for a few seconds, often mistaken for daydreaming.

Both Zarontin and Ethosuximide products (capsule and oral solution forms) are approved for this use. Either may also be used alongside other seizure medicines when a patient has absence seizures together with other types of epilepsy.
