From the HelloPharmacist Editorial Team · Updated July 2026Based on the available evidence, the overall risk of a clinically significant Ip-6 drug interaction appears low for most people. None of the listed interactions are rated major, and the single concern behind them all is theoretical, without confirmation in human studies.
The one interaction worth knowing about involves blood thinners, meaning anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs such as those used to prevent clots. In lab studies, Ip-6 kept platelets from clumping together, which in theory could add to the effect of these medicines and raise bleeding risk. That said, this effect has not been shown to happen in people, so it remains a precaution rather than a proven problem. Because bleeding risk is closely watched in anyone on these drugs, it is still the combination we would keep an eye on.
Although the number of medications listed looks large, nearly all of them trace back to this one lab-based finding about platelets. A long list here does not mean many separate dangers, and the predicted bleeding effect has not produced meaningful changes in humans.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of IP-6 with drugs that affect platelet aggregation may increase the risk of bleeding. In vitro IP-6 can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been demonstrated in humans.
Ip-6: Uses, Safety & Side Effects
IP-6 (inositol hexaphosphate, also called phytic acid or phytate) is a natural compound found in high-fiber plant foods and sold as a supplement, often paired with inositol. It is most studied as an antioxidant and mineral binder, but human evidence for its popular uses—such as cancer prevention—is limited and not conclusive. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have low mineral levels or a chronic condition.

Overview
IP-6 stands for inositol hexaphosphate. It is also known as phytic acid or phytate. It is a natural substance found in many plant foods, especially whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. In plants it acts as the main way to store phosphorus.
As a supplement, IP-6 is often made from rice bran or corn and is frequently sold together with inositol. People take it hoping for antioxidant and general health benefits. It became popular partly through books and marketing that promoted it for cancer prevention, though strong human proof is lacking.
How it works
IP-6 is a molecule that binds tightly to minerals such as iron, calcium, zinc, and magnesium. Because it grabs onto iron, researchers think it may reduce the kind of oxidative damage that free iron can cause. This is one reason it is studied as an antioxidant.
In test-tube and animal research, IP-6 appears to affect cell signaling and may slow the growth of certain abnormal cells. Some scientists also study how it may influence the formation of crystals that lead to kidney stones.
It is important to know that most of these proposed actions are based on laboratory and animal models, not on solid human outcomes. The exact way it works in people is not fully understood.

Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Chemotherapy-induced leukopenia
Two very small clinical studies show that topical application with IP-6 200 mg or oral intake of IP-6 plus inositol 6 grams daily for 6 months attenuates a reduction in white and red blood cell counts when compared with a control group. Some patients also reported an improvement in quality of life.
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Gout
Preliminary clinical research in adults with asymptomatic hyperuricemia shows that taking IP-6 600 mg twice daily for two weeks reduces fasting uric acid levels when compared with control. It is unclear if this reduction in uric acid levels would result in symptom improvement in patients with symptomatic gout.

Safety & precautions
In the amounts naturally found in food, IP-6 (phytate) is considered safe and is part of a normal diet. The bigger question is the safety of concentrated supplements, which have not been studied well over the long term.
Because IP-6 binds minerals, taking large amounts may lower the absorption of iron, calcium, zinc, and magnesium. This may be a concern for people with anemia, low mineral levels, osteoporosis, or those who eat a limited diet. People with kidney disease should be especially careful and check with their doctor first.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there is not enough safety information, so it is best to avoid IP-6 supplements during these times. Always talk to a pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you have a chronic condition or take other medicines.
Side effects
IP-6 is usually well tolerated when used short term. The most commonly reported side effects are mild and digestive, such as stomach upset, gas, or loose stools.
A more important long-term concern is reduced absorption of minerals, which over time could contribute to low iron or other mineral deficiencies. Serious side effects have not been clearly reported, but because long-term human data are limited, the full safety picture is not known.
Dosing
There is no officially established or standardized dose for IP-6 supplements. Products vary widely, and many combine IP-6 with inositol.
The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed them. Because IP-6 can affect mineral absorption, some people take it between meals, but you should check with a pharmacist before deciding how and when to use it. If you are taking it for any health condition, talk with your doctor first.
