Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
LAMOTRIGINE (Lamictal)
A pharmacokinetic study in patients taking lamotrigine shows that consumption of coffee, both caffeinated and decaffeinated, can decrease the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) and the peak plasma level (Cmax) of lamotrigine. Each additional cup of coffee reduced the AUC and Cmax by 4% and 3%, respectively. It is unclear whether this interaction is due to induction of lamotrigine metabolism or inhibition of lamotrigine absorption.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist for lamotrigine (Lamictal) and your morning coffee. A study in people taking lamotrigine found that drinking coffee, whether regular or decaf, slightly lowered the amount of drug that reached the bloodstream. Each cup trimmed the levels by only a few percent. Researchers aren't sure if coffee speeds up how the body clears lamotrigine or just blocks a bit of it from being absorbed.
Because lamotrigine works best at steady levels, a meaningful drop could, in theory, make it less effective (for example, less seizure or mood control). That said, the changes here are small, and one or two cups a day likely won't be a problem. The bigger concern is being consistent. Don't suddenly change your coffee habits without talking to your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Coffee
What is Coffee?
- Alertness and reducing fatigue
- Mental focus and concentration
- Athletic performance
- Headache relief
- Weight management
Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
About Lamotrigine
What Is Lamotrigine Used For?
Brand name: Lamictal
Lamotrigine is used to treat several types of seizures in adults and children aged 2 and older — including partial-onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and seizures related to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In older teens and adults, it can also be used alone (monotherapy) after transitioning off another seizure medicine.
For adults with bipolar I disorder, lamotrigine is used as a maintenance treatment — meaning it helps delay the return of mood episodes like depression, mania, or mixed states. It is not approved to treat an active manic or mixed episode that's happening right now.

Lamotrigine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Lamotrigine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Coffee — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
