Hemp and Amitriptyline, Chlordiazepoxide

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Amitriptyline, Chlordiazepoxide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Amitriptyline, Chlordiazepoxide

Amitriptyline, Chlordiazepoxide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Limbitrol DS, which combines amitriptyline (an antidepressant) and chlordiazepoxide (a sedative). The amitriptyline part is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab studies suggest hemp may speed up that enzyme, which could in theory clear amitriptyline a bit faster and make it work less well. You might notice your depression or anxiety symptoms creeping back, though this is far from certain.

The important part: this is only theoretical, based on test-tube research, not real patients. Everyday food amounts of hemp seeds or oil are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Amitriptyline, Chlordiazepoxide also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Limbitrol DS combines amitriptyline (an antidepressant) with chlordiazepoxide (a calming, anti-anxiety medicine). Both are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The concern here is that hemp may gently speed up that enzyme, which could clear these drugs a little faster and possibly soften how well they work. In real terms, you might notice your mood support or anxiety relief feeling a bit weaker.

That said, this is a minor, theoretical flag based only on lab studies, not on people taking hemp and this medicine together. Eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food is very unlikely to matter. If you want to use a concentrated hemp supplement, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amitriptyline, Chlordiazepoxide page

“Alcohol is the first thing to know about here. Beer and wine both carry major, well-documented interactions with Amitriptyline and Chlordiazepoxide (Limbitrol DS), because both drugs already slow the central nervous system, and anything sedating layered on top can deepen ordinary drowsiness into something dangerous.”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
