Hemp and Betrixaban

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Betrixaban

Betrixaban falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical picture with Betrixaban (Bevyxxa), your blood thinner that blocks factor Xa to prevent clots in your legs and lungs. The theory on file is that hemp might make platelets a little less sticky, so pairing it with a blood thinner could, in theory, nudge up your bleeding risk. Think easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes only from lab and animal work, and one human study using 2 grams of hemp seed oil daily for 12 weeks did not reduce platelet clumping. Hemp seeds in normal food amounts are very unlikely to matter. Still, since you're on an anticoagulant, mention any hemp supplement to your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
