Hemp and Fosinopril

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Fosinopril falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Fosinopril

Fosinopril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Here's the gist for hemp and Fosinopril (Monopril): on paper, certain proteins broken down from hemp seed might gently lower blood pressure in the same way your medication does, by easing up on enzymes like ACE and renin. Since fosinopril is itself an ACE inhibitor, the worry is that the two could add together and drop your pressure a little too far.

The good news is this is very weak evidence. It only showed up in animals with high blood pressure, and human studies of hemp oil did not lower blood pressure at all. Food amounts of hemp seeds are unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you notice dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when standing, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs)

2 of 2

Fosinopril also falls under ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs).

Theoretically, consuming hemp seed protein isolate with ACE inhibitors might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Hemp seed protein hydrolysate has shown ACE inhibitor-like effects in a hypertensive animal model. However, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans. Until more is known, monitor blood pressure and potassium levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with hemp and your fosinopril (Monopril). In lab and animal studies, concentrated hemp seed protein has shown a mild ACE-blocking effect, much like what your blood pressure medicine does. The worry on paper is that stacking the two could push your blood pressure a little lower than intended, which might leave you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or tired, especially when standing up quickly.

That said, this is theoretical and rated as minor and unlikely. In real human studies, hemp seed oil didn't actually lower blood pressure. Everyday hemp foods like seeds in your oatmeal are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using a concentrated hemp protein supplement, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your blood pressure and potassium.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fosinopril page

“I would read the supplement list for fosinopril (Monopril), a blood pressure medicine, with genuine care, because a handful of these combinations can do real harm. Most of what interacts touches blood pressure itself, either adding to fosinopril's lowering effect or working against it, tyramine being a well-documented example of the la…”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
