Pitolisant Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with hemp and your Wakix (pitolisant). Pitolisant is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some early lab research suggests hemp might speed up that enzyme, which in theory could clear pitolisant a little faster and make it slightly less effective. For you, that might mean a bit less help with the daytime sleepiness or cataplexy that pitolisant is meant to control.

The good news: this is rated minor and comes only from test-tube studies, not from people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Hemp seeds or hemp oil eaten as food are very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how well Wakix is working.

What Is Pitolisant Used For?

Brand name: Wakix

Wakix (pitolisant) is used to treat two hallmark problems of narcolepsy: excessive daytime sleepiness (feeling overwhelmingly tired and unable to stay awake during the day) and cataplexy (sudden episodes of muscle weakness or loss of muscle control, often triggered by emotion). It is approved for adults and children 6 years of age and older.

Both uses are specific to Wakix tablets taken by mouth. The drug is not approved for sleepiness or cataplexy caused by conditions other than narcolepsy.
