Hemp and Tenecteplase

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Tenecteplase

Tenecteplase falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about tenecteplase (TNKase): it's a powerful clot-busting drug given in the hospital, usually as a single shot during an emergency like a heart attack. Because it dissolves clots, bleeding is already its main risk, and your medical team watches you very closely for it.

The concern on file is that hemp seed might theoretically add to that bleeding risk by making platelets a little less sticky. But be reassured: this idea comes from lab and animal studies, and actual human research with hemp seed oil (2 grams daily for 12 weeks) did not show any effect on platelets. Since tenecteplase is a one-time emergency treatment, this is mostly a non-issue. Still, always tell your care team about any supplements you take.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tenecteplase page

“Tenecteplase (TNKase) is a clot-busting drug given in the emergency room for strokes and heart attacks, so the real question is not what you would take alongside it but what is already in your system when the injection arrives. This list deserves genuine caution.”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
