SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Tranylcypromine
Tranylcypromine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the thinking behind pairing theanine with tranylcypromine (Parnate). Parnate is a strong MAO inhibitor, which means it raises levels of brain chemicals like serotonin. Theanine may also nudge serotonin, though the research is honestly mixed, with some studies showing a rise and others a dip. The worry on paper is that stacking two things that touch serotonin could, in theory, push it too high (what we call serotonin syndrome, with symptoms like agitation, sweating, fast heartbeat, or shakiness).
In real life, though, this is rated minor and unlikely, and there are no reports of theanine actually triggering this. The evidence is weak. Since Parnate reacts with so many substances, I'd still run any new supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first, just to be safe.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tranylcypromine page
“Tranylcypromine (Parnate) belongs to the MAOI class of antidepressants, and I read its supplement list with real seriousness, since the highest-rated entries can turn dangerous quickly. The drug blocks the enzyme that normally clears tyramine, so tyramine-rich items like brewer's yeast, fermented soy, and even beer or wine can push blo…”

About Theanine
What is Theanine?
- Anxiety and stress
- Relaxation and calm
- Sleep support
- Focus and cognitive function
Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Tranylcypromine
What Is Tranylcypromine Used For?
Brand name: Parnate
Tranylcypromine tablets — sold as Parnate, Tranylcypromine, and Tranylcypromine Sulfate — are used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. It is not a first-choice antidepressant; it is specifically for people who have already tried other antidepressants and have not gotten adequate relief.
Because of its serious potential side effects, strict dietary requirements, and many drug interactions, tranylcypromine is reserved for cases where other treatments have not worked. It is not approved for use in children.

Tranylcypromine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Tranylcypromine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Theanine — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
