Chlorpromazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, yohimbe might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark, inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

Here's the basic idea with these two together. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down chlorpromazine. Yohimbine, the active part of yohimbe, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, chlorpromazine could clear out of your body more slowly and build up higher than expected. That could mean more of its usual side effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when you stand up, or a faster heartbeat.

I'll be honest with you though, this concern is mostly theoretical and comes from lab studies, not from people. On top of that, yohimbe itself can raise blood pressure and speed up your heart, which doesn't mix well with chlorpromazine. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, has alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist effects. Theoretically, combining it with phenothiazines can cause additive alpha-2 adrenergic antagonism.

Here's the gist for these two together. Chlorpromazine (Thorazine) already blocks alpha adrenergic receptors, which is part of why it can drop your blood pressure and leave you feeling lightheaded or dizzy, especially when you stand up. Yohimbe contains yohimbine, which acts on those same alpha-2 receptors. On paper, stacking them could add to that effect.

I'll be straight with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how both work, not something proven in studies, so it isn't a reason to panic. Still, yohimbe is unpredictable and can spike heart rate and blood pressure on its own. With a medication like chlorpromazine in the mix, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Chlorpromazine Used For?

Brand names: Thorazine, Thorazine Spansules

Chlorpromazine is used to manage psychotic disorders and treat schizophrenia. It also controls nausea and vomiting, relieves restlessness and apprehension before surgery, and controls the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Other uses include relief of intractable hiccups, treatment of acute intermittent porphyria, and use as an adjunct in tetanus treatment.

In children ages 1 to 12, it is used for severe behavioral problems marked by explosive or combative behavior, and for short-term treatment of hyperactive children with conduct disorders. The oral forms are also approved for the management of manifestations of psychotic disorders broadly, in addition to the uses shared with the injection form.
