Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark.
In vitro and clinical research shows that the yohimbe bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine.

Here's the thing to know about pairing yohimbe with your birth control pill (Lybrel): the concern runs in one direction. Yohimbine, the active part of yohimbe, is broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Your pill, ethinyl estradiol plus levonorgestrel, can mildly slow that same enzyme. In theory, that could let yohimbine build up a bit higher than expected.

If that happens, you might notice more of yohimbe's own side effects, things like a racing heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiety, or higher blood pressure. This is a theoretical interaction based on how the drugs work, not strong real-world proof, and your pill's effectiveness isn't reduced. Still, because yohimbe can be unpredictable, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the basic idea with your birth control pill (Lybrel). In lab studies, yohimbe seems to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the enzymes your body uses to break down the estrogen part of your pill. If that enzyme works faster, your hormone levels could theoretically dip a little lower than expected. The worry there is reduced reliability, meaning a small chance of breakthrough bleeding or, in the bigger picture, less protection against pregnancy.

That said, this is very weak evidence. It comes only from test-tube and not real human studies, and it's rated a minor interaction. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since pregnancy prevention matters, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before adding yohimbe.

Your birth control pill (Lybrel) combines two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and your liver clears them using an enzyme called CYP3A4. Some lab research suggests yohimbe might speed that enzyme up. In theory, if your body breaks these hormones down faster, the hormone levels could dip a little, which in turn could slightly weaken the protection your pill provides.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it comes only from test-tube studies, not from people, so the real-world risk is uncertain and rated as minor. Still, since an unplanned pregnancy is a big deal, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding yohimbe, especially given its own effects on blood pressure and heart rate.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate.
