In vitro and clinical research shows that the yohimbe bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine.

Here the direction is a little different from what people usually expect. Your birth control pill (the combination of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) isn't the thing being changed. Instead, the estrogen part can act as a mild blocker of the CYP3A4 enzyme, which is one of the pathways that breaks down yohimbine, the active piece of yohimbe. By slowing that breakdown, the pill could theoretically let more yohimbine build up in your system.

That matters because more yohimbine usually means a stronger chance of its side effects, things like a racing heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiety, and spikes in blood pressure. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs are processed, not on real-world reports, so don't panic. Still, since yohimbe can be unpredictable on its own, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo). Some lab studies suggest yohimbe might speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down hormones. If that happens, your pill could clear out a little faster and run at slightly lower levels. In theory, that might make it a touch less reliable at preventing pregnancy.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though: it comes only from test-tube research, not real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. Your birth control pill (ethinyl estradiol with levonorgestrel) is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The concern here is that yohimbe, based on lab studies, may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in real life, your body could break down the hormones a little faster, which in theory could lower their levels and make the pill slightly less reliable.

I want to be honest about how weak this is. It comes only from test-tube research, not from people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since an unintended pregnancy is a big deal, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before adding yohimbe.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate.
