In vitro and clinical research shows that the yohimbe bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine.

Here's the thing to understand with this pairing: your birth control pill (Ovral, Lo/Ovral and similar) contains ethinyl estradiol, which has a mild blocking effect on the liver enzyme CYP3A4. Yohimbine, the active part of yohimbe, is broken down by that same enzyme. So in theory, the estrogen in your pill could slow how fast your body clears yohimbine, letting it build up a bit. That might mean stronger yohimbe side effects like a racing heart, jitteriness, anxiety, or elevated blood pressure.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not something proven in real patients. It also doesn't make your birth control any less effective. Still, since over-the-counter yohimbe is unpredictable and can spike blood pressure on its own, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the basic idea with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel combo). Lab studies suggest yohimbe might speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps clear estrogen from your body. If that enzyme runs faster, your body could break down the estrogen a bit quicker, which in theory might lower the hormone levels a little.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. It's rated minor and comes only from test-tube research, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, weaker birth control could mean breakthrough bleeding or, at worst, reduced pregnancy protection. Yohimbe itself can also raise blood pressure and heart rate, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate.
