Here's the simple version: the Daytrana patch already delivers a steady dose of methylphenidate, a stimulant that revs up your nervous system. Guarana is basically a concentrated source of caffeine, which is also a stimulant. Stack two stimulants together and you can pile on the side effects, things like a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, and a higher blood pressure.

Now, the honest caveat: this concern is theoretical, based on how these two work, not on hard studies of the patch plus guarana. A little caffeine from a normal cup of coffee or tea probably isn't a big deal for most folks, but concentrated guarana supplements (often hidden in energy and weight-loss products) are where it adds up. If you'd like to use it, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you notice your heart racing.

Methylphenidate Transdermal System — available as Daytrana and Methylphenidate Transdermal System — is approved to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in pediatric patients ages 6 to 17 years.

It is not recommended for children under 6, because younger patients had higher drug exposure in the body and a higher rate of side effects such as weight loss compared to older children at the same dose.
