Hemp and Aspirin, Pentazocine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Pentazocine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine

Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Talwin Compound contains aspirin, which already thins your blood a bit by making platelets less sticky. The thought here is that hemp seed might nudge things in the same direction, so in theory the two together could raise your bleeding risk slightly. In real life, that might show up as easier bruising, a nosebleed that takes longer to stop, or bleeding gums when you brush.

Here is the reassuring part: this concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies. When people actually took hemp seed oil (2 grams daily for 12 weeks), it did not measurably affect platelets. So the evidence is weak, and ordinary food amounts of hemp are unlikely to cause trouble. Still, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you notice any unusual bleeding.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Aspirin, Pentazocine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist with Talwin Compound (which pairs aspirin with the pain reliever pentazocine) and hemp. Lab-dish research hints that hemp might rev up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps the body process pentazocine. If that enzyme speeds up, your body could clear the pentazocine a little faster, which in theory might make it slightly less effective at controlling pain.

I want to be honest about how weak this is. It comes only from test-tube and animal studies, not from people, and it's rated as a minor concern. Eating hemp seeds or a bit of hemp oil in food almost certainly won't matter. If you use concentrated hemp supplements daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your pain relief.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page

“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
