Hemp and Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide

Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.

Here's the short version: hemp seed protein has been studied in animals where it seemed to lower blood pressure partly by blocking ACE, the same general enzyme target that benazepril works on. Your medicine pairs that ACE blocker with hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill. So on paper, hemp could nudge your blood pressure in the same direction the medication already does.

Honestly, though, this is very weak. The effect showed up in lab and animal studies, not in people, and human research with hemp oil didn't actually lower blood pressure. Eating hemp seeds or oil as food is unlikely to cause trouble. If you ever feel dizzy, lightheaded, or extra tired, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs)

2 of 2

Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide also falls under ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs).

Theoretically, consuming hemp seed protein isolate with ACE inhibitors might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Hemp seed protein hydrolysate has shown ACE inhibitor-like effects in a hypertensive animal model. However, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans. Until more is known, monitor blood pressure and potassium levels.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your Lotensin HCT pairs an ACE inhibitor (benazepril) with a water pill (hydrochlorothiazide), and both already work to lower your blood pressure. In a lab and animal study, a concentrated hemp seed protein showed mild ACE inhibitor-like activity. The thought is that, in theory, it could add a little to your medication's effect and nudge your pressure down further.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is very weak evidence, and in real human studies hemp seed oil didn't actually lower blood pressure. Eating hemp seeds or oil as food is unlikely to cause trouble. With concentrated protein supplements, just keep an eye out for dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when standing, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before starting anything new.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide page

“Lotensin HCT (benazepril with hydrochlorothiazide) lowers blood pressure two ways at once, and that is exactly why this list deserves a careful read rather than a skim. Most of the interacting supplements either stack on that effect and drop pressure too far, or push against it and undo the control the drug provides.”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
