Hemp and Sodium Nitroprusside

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Sodium Nitroprusside

Sodium Nitroprusside falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: this one is mostly theoretical. The concern is that hemp seed protein might nudge blood pressure down a little on its own, which could in theory add to a blood pressure lowering drug. But the evidence is weak. It comes from animal studies, and in those studies hemp only lowered blood pressure when it was already high. In people, hemp seed oil hasn't been shown to drop blood pressure at all.

Sodium nitroprusside is a different animal entirely. It's a powerful IV drip given in a hospital to control blood pressure minute by minute, with constant monitoring. Your care team adjusts the dose in real time, so a food like hemp seeds isn't going to throw that off. Still, always tell your providers about any supplements you take so they have the full picture.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sodium Nitroprusside page

“Sodium nitroprusside (Nipride RTU) is given by IV in hospitals to bring dangerously high blood pressure down within minutes, so anything that nudges pressure in either direction earns real vigilance here. All but two of the 121 supplements and herbs on this page interact through blood pressure itself, and the three major-rated entries…”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
