Here's the gist for Zileuton (Zyflo): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help clear this medicine. Some early lab research suggests hemp might rev up (induce) that enzyme. If that happened in real life, your body could break down zileuton a little faster, leaving slightly less of it working. In theory, that might make it a bit less effective at keeping your asthma calm, meaning more wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.

I want to be honest, though: this is based only on test-tube data, not on people, and it's rated a minor, theoretical concern. Eating hemp seeds in food almost certainly won't be an issue. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements and notice your breathing slipping, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Here's the gist for hemp and Zileuton. Zileuton is one of the medicines your body partly clears using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some early lab research hints that hemp may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could break down Zileuton a bit faster, which in theory might make it a little less effective at keeping your asthma symptoms (wheezing, coughing, chest tightness) under control. Zileuton is the active drug itself, not a prodrug, so faster clearance means less effect, not more.

The important thing: this is only test-tube data, rated minor, so it may not matter at all in everyday life. Eating hemp seeds or oil as food is unlikely to be a problem. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
